We know our community loves a good DIY project – and if hanging baskets have recently been ticked off your to-do list, then it’s time to follow our easy guide on how to care for hanging plants to keep them thriving.
Follow our hanging plant care steps below!
Position them well
Research your hanging plant type to find out what they like. Do they prefer direct light, dappled light or shade? Be mindful of their location so they can reward you with lush leaves and flourishing flowers.
Water them wisely
When the top inch of soil feels dry, give them a good drink and let the extra water drain out (nobody likes soggy roots)! Try to water them between 5-9am in spring and summer so that they remain hydrated throughout the day. In the winter, water them roughly every other week.
Feed them occasionally
Treat them to a balanced liquid fertiliser once a month – a leafy spa day keeps them healthy. Check the directions on your plant feed to ensure you give them just the right amount.
Prune and deadhead them when the time’s right
To encourage your hanging plant to keep growing, it’s important to deadhead withered leaves or flowers so the plant doesn’t waste any energy on spent foliage.
Maintain your basket
Keep your hanging plant basket chains or hooks squeak free, rust free and swinging smoothly by using 3-IN-ONE White Lithium. Clean the area first to wipe away any dirt so the formula will stick better and then spray a small amount directly onto the parts that need attention. Jiggle the chains and swivel the hooks to work it in and wipe away excess.
Maintain your gardening tools
Always remember to clean your gardening tools after potting new plants to prevent spreading disease between plants and to keep your equipment in its best condition. Remember a little 3-IN-ONE Drip Oil to clean, lubricate and prevent rust.
