September flowers: what to plant in autumn

Planting September flowers is a great idea for many reasons, it allows them to establish roots while the soil isn’t too hot or too cold, it saves you time from the springtime rush and provides you with bigger and better flowers for longer in the year to come.

If you’re ready to set the stage for a spectacular summer display, here are the September flowers you will want to sow now.

English marigold

Known for its vibrant yellow, gold and orange petals, English marigold is an ideal September flower to get started with.

Find the sunniest spot and prepare the soil by clearing the area, loosening the soil with a triller and create grooves with a fork so the soil has shallow drills ready for sowing your marigold seeds

Lightly water the soil to encourage germination, sow the seeds into the drills and then cover with a light layer of soil, and water gently

Get a head start on vibrant spring blooms – sow now and you could enjoy flowers in May.

Queen Anne’s lace

This flower is self-fertile and spreads out, producing large displays between June and August. It’s made up of large clusters of tiny white flowers that create an umbrella shape, they grow up to 4 feet tall and attract lots of wildlife such as bees and butterflies.

When sowing the seeds for this September flower, choose a sunny spot and ensure the soil drains well. Prepare the soil and rake to ensure the surface is even.

Scatter the seeds evenly and press them into the soil, with these seeds, you don’t want to cover them in too much soil because they’re so small.

Water the area lightly to dampen the soil and newly sewn seeds.

Poppies

Prepare to draw the eye with an extravagant display of red petals. If you sow poppies in autumn, they will develop strong roots and provide you with robust and abundant flowers around late spring.

As with the other September flowers, find a sunny spot, ideally one that sits in full sun for most of the day. Prepare the soil and sow them evenly across the surface, do not cover them with soil, simply press them down into the soil to allow them to germinate.

Water them lightly and remember to keep the soil moist.
