Storing garden tools away for winter

As the gardening season ends for the year, it’s time to give your garden tools the attention they deserve. Maintaining and properly storing your garden tools will keep them in tip top condition and save you money on replacements when spring rolls around!

How to properly store your garden tools

Before jumping straight into storing your garden tools, make sure you clean, lubricate and protect them before hanging them or boxing them up. Here’s how to prepare them for storage first!

Clean your garden tools
Hand tools (spades, trowels and pruners): add a drop of 3-IN-ONE Multi-Purpose Oil Spray onto the blades and wipe with a cloth to remove dirt, sap and residue, which can cause rust to form.

Larger tools (shovels and rakes): rinse them and allow to dry. Apply the Oil Spray onto the blades of the shovel and the tines of the rake and wipe for a deep clean.

Lubricate your garden tools
Once your tools are clean, add the red straw to the nozzle and spray the pivot points, along the blade and use a clean cloth to wipe away excess.

Protect your garden tools
With the cloth you have used to wipe away excess oil, wipe along the garden tool handles to prevent them from cracking or splitting.

Top tips for garden tool storage

Now your tools have been properly maintained, they’re ready to be stored – here’s what we recommend.

  1. Hang tools up – keep large garden tools off the ground by hanging them up.
  2. Use tool storage cabinets – keep small garden tools in drawer compartments to keep them organised.
  3. Keep the space dry and well ventilated – to reduce moisture build up in your garage or shed, make sure the area is well ventilated, or use a dehumidifier to better control the environment.
