Starting a DIY van conversion is an exciting time and with so many decisions to make, it can be easy to jump straight into building. To keep your van conversion on the straight and narrow, we’ve got a list of the early-stage essentials.
1. Be real about your budget
Decide how much you can comfortably spend on the entire van conversion. This includes things like materials, tools, fittings and a emergency fund for unexpected costs.
2. Gather your tools early
Van conversions typically require a combination of everyday DIY tools and more specialist ones. Think about borrowing or hiring to save money and prevent frustrating delays once the build is underway. Having the right tools from the beginning means you can use your dedicated van conversion time wisely.
3. Prepare your van conversion properly
Used vans often need a deep clean and maintenance before any building begins.
- Use 3-IN-ONE Degreaser Spray to remove oil, grease, dirt and grime from metal surfaces, tools and even the engine.
- Winter can make doors and window tracks stiff. Apply 3-IN-ONE Silicone Lubricant to keep hinges, rollers and sliding tracks moving smoothly.
- Add a few drops of 3-IN-ONE Drip Oil to lubricate moving parts and protect against rust.
4. Check the structural basics
Look at the core structure of the van. Is the floor in good condition? Check the floor for soft spots, rust or uneven areas. Check door seals, windows and body panels for signs of leaks or damage. Spotting and fixing these problems early prevents moisture problems, heat loss and costly repairs later.
5. Plan your layout
Take accurate interior measurements and sketch out where you want the bed, storage, kitchen area and electrics to sit. With limited space, you want to think about how you access things and how you can move through the space comfortably. Make sure doors can open fully without hitting beds, worktops or seating and that everything is easy to reach.
6. Clean and protect the engine bay
Always ensure it’s cool and the vehicle is switched off. Remove loose dirt or leaves you can see by hand. Then lightly spray a degreaser onto the metal parts of the engine bay where you can see built-up, oily residue. Avoid electrical components. Wipe away with a clean cloth and for any difficult bits, use a toothbrush. Once everything is dry and clean, apply a little 3-IN-ONE Drip Oil to the hinges and latches, exposed metal linkages or pivots, bolts, brackets or fasteners.
